The Lhasa Apso is a purebred dog that competes against other Lhasas at conformation dog shows to determine how well it conforms to the AKC approved Lhasa Apso breed standard and is worthy of the Champion title.

The Lhasa Apso show dog is judged on its appearance in the show ring, not on its inherited ability to discriminate friend from foe and sound an alarm when strangers approach. Most championed show dogs will be used as breeding stock, a good specimen of the breed will reproduce equal to or better than themselves.

The purpose of dog shows is to exhibit your breed to several experts (judges). The judge awards championship points to only two dogs in each breed per show, winners dog and winners bitch.

The American Kennel Club point system requires that you accumulate a total of 15 points, out of the 15 points 2 sets of points have to be majors (more than 3 points [which is based on the number of dogs you competed against in their sex], these majors have to be awarded by two different judges.

Obedience is a fun competition for retired Champions, or for members of the breed that for one reason or another did not make it in the conformation ring.

My Lhasa Apso BISS Ch NuSeng's All That Glitters CD CGC competed in the Conformation ring and then went on to compete in Obedience and earned her OB Companion Dog title. NuSeng's My-T-Luv Bear earned a CD, CDX & UD title as well as my Sera Mar's Beau Jeste CD at the age of 9 years old.

BJ never got to show in the conformation ring but at the age of 8-1/2 years I started training him in Obedience to compete at our National Specialty. He earned his first CD leg at the 1988 National Specilaty held in Colorado and finished a month later at the local all breed shows.

Obedience training is something that can lead to some interesting stories. For example, Goldie and her brother Topper appeared on stage in an Opera "The Rosen Cavelier", the stage presentation lasted 5 days with 2 performances during the week and 3 performances on the weekend.

Walker also appeared in the entertainment world, he was on Animal Planet in Meet the Lhasa Apso Breed and in the AP series Busted.

All 3 of these Lhasa Apso dogs were wonderful ambassadors for the breed and they enjoyed being in the spotlight and were on their best behavior at all times.

Producers, camera people and the actors were in love of them and were not embarassed to say so.
